Catlins Bound
Catlins Bound
The Book:
William McPhee’s ketches and schooners delivered timber and general cargo to villages and towns around New Zealand. They battled through both Foveaux and Cook Straits; storms accompanied them and dangerous river entrances awaited them. You will meet the ships, and the captains – good ships and good seamen, they knew their business well.
The Art:
Original watercolour illustrations for the book, and scenes of the rugged Catlins Coast, combine to create a special Art Exhibition
The Model:
A new scale model of the McPhee ship Owake has been built by Robin Watkins of Dunedin.
The Music:
A brand new CD of sea shanties and songs by The Maritime Crew has been composed. All the music on the “Catlins Bound” CD was inspired by Catlins Bound stories.
“Catlins Bound” is a new book by Mike McPhee about his great grandfather’s sailing ships which were built in The Catlins and Stewart Island in the 19th Century. The book includes a CD of original music by The Maritime Crew.
”Catlins Bound” was launched at the Owaka Museum, The Catlins, (Sat 14th Nov) with accompanying art exhibition, model unveiling, and music. The Art exhibition is currently on display.
